Historic Coca-Cola Sign Revealed
It's been 95 years since this Coca-Cola sign disappeared from view. It will vanish again soon, as a building housing 3500 square feet of commercial street-level space and 124 residential rental units rises to replace the now demolished St. Denys apartments. But for the moment we are able to see a piece of our city as it was.
The wall dogs painted this Coca-Cola ad on the east wall of 284 King Street East. Today the building is the headquarters of Denninger's Foods of the World, but a century ago it was the factory of Andrew Ross Carriage and Wagon Builder. They were called the wall dogs, the men who roamed from town to town in the early 1900s painting big signs for soft drinks, flour, cigars, laundry soap. Along the top, the painters put the carriage man's name in large letters. And then they really went to work on the Coca-Cola message. (Click on photo for a larger image.)
