The Village is home to a variety of cafes, each with their own flair. Originally opened in 2013, Cafe Oranje provides downtown with a contemporary Euro-styled coffeehouse with a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Steps from the downtown Hamilton arches, Cafe Oranje is a full service espresso and coffee bar that serves baked treats, light breakfast and lunch.

One of the most interesting aspects of the cafe is the warm, friendly atmosphere that owner Mina has worked to create over the years. Cafe Oranje has become a destination cafe in downtown Hamilton for some of the finest coffee around.

In these uncertain times, we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the wonderful business owners, like Mina, to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the entrepreneurial spirit of the businesses in The Village:

Why did you choose to open your business?

“As a longtime resident of downtown Hamilton, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to own and operate a small business in the core of the city. I purchased the business from the founding owner in July 2016. I had always wanted to own and operate my own small business, and as my long career in medical research was winding down, I felt it was a great opportunity to explore something new.”

What sets Cafe Oranje apart?

“We are a cozy, welcoming, community focused shop serving delicious specialty drinks, coffee, tea, home baked treats and light breakfast and lunch.

We try to support our local economy by sourcing as many of our products as possible from local suppliers. Our coffee beans are all Fair Trade Organic or sustainably sourced from local roasters Vintage, Signal & Relay. As well as in house baking, we source some of our treats from Cake & Loaf Bakery and Fairly Frosted Bakery.

Our cheeses for our Dutch tosti’s (hot pressed sandwiches) are sourced from East Hamilton Cheese and are made by Ontario farmers. We also sell small tubs of small batch, from-scratch ice cream from Willard’s (Ottawa near Gage). We love our local small businesses!”

How are you operating during the COVID-19 pandemic?

“We are taking orders for bulk coffee, bulk tea, bulk frozen croquettes, and frozen mini savoury pies for curbside pickup or porch delivery.

We have also partnered with JHGordon Books to provide book delivery plus 1/2lb of coffee or 50g of tea. Also, guests can email us at info@cafeoranje.ca or direct message us on Instagram or Facebook.”
