Tundra Leather is one of The Village’s long-standing businesses, dating back to 1991. Tundra Leather is a small family-owned business run by Sylvia and Kristi. With over 50 years of hand-on leather working experience, they provide Hamilton with some of the most intricate and unique custom leatherwork, as well as leathercraft supply, and leatherwork classes.
The Village is home to many passionate business owners, like Slyvia and Krisit. In these uncertain times, we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of our resilient members to give you a behind-the-scenes look at those businesses:
Why did you choose to open your business?
“It was a good neighbourhood, and my Dad had faith in downtown. We were a Tandy Leather location (it was there since 1961) and in 1991 it was closing.
My Dad wanted to keep doing leatherwork in Hamilton so bought the building and the contents. He had been doing leatherwork since he was nine, and never stopped. He was then able to do custom work, and stock more of the things he wanted.”
What makes Tundra Leather unique?
“There’s no one else doing this type of work or business in Hamilton.”
How are you operating during the COVID-19 pandemic?
“We’ve posted some templates and kits online for sale that people can purchase to do their own leatherwork. We’re still taking orders, so people can contact us directly if they need to order leather (not for sale online yet).
We have a few things in our online shop, which we’re now accepting PayPal for, but you can always call or email the shop directly with any questions or any order, and we’ll mail it out to you. We’re offering 25% off Canada Post shipping.”
What did you miss during the COVID-19 shutdown?
“Seeing our customers and being able to work together as a team! We’ll be back open as soon as we can and we can’t wait to see everyone!”
