Open Streets Hamilton — June 18th, 2023
A message from the City of Hamilton about the upcoming Open Streets Hamilton event:
As a business on King Street, we invite you to join us by moving a part of your business from your storefront to the street on Sunday, June 18th 2023 as part of Open Streets Hamilton. From 10AM-2PM, a portion of King Street, from John Street to Gage Avenue, will be transformed into a linear urban park, providing the public with an opportunity to experience King Street in a unique way, car-free!
While some additional programming will be planned, this event is not organized as a festival. Additionally, no outside vendors will be permitted. This will help to showcase the fantastic local businesses that already exist on the street. All purchases made by Open Streets Hamilton participants will be made at established businesses along the route.
What is Open Streets:
Open Streets are programs where the streets are opened to people and closed to cars. People traffic replaces car traffic, and the streets become “paved parks” where people of all ages, abilities, and social, economic, and ethnic background can come out and improve their health. Open Streets happen all over the world to promote physical activity and engage with our streets in a fun way.
What Time is the Event?
The event will run from 10AM until 2PM, but expect King Street East to be closed earlier at 5AM and reopened at 3PM to ensure the safety of our participants and volunteers. The side streets will be reopened by 4PM.
What Area is Closed to Traffic?
King Street East from John Street to Gage Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic. North-south traffic will be able to cross King Street at John St, Wellington, Victoria Ave, Wentworth, Sanford Ave N, Sherman Ave and Gage Avenue. Police, security and Open Street volunteers will be on-site to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists throughout the event.
